Three Steps to Creating a Strong Team

Teaming can be a challenge for leaders everywhere.

What helps leaders to create successful teams?

I’d start by saying that this is not a do once and done exercise. Yes unfortunately, there is no magic bullet or guaranteed steps for leaders to follow.

1. I would however offer that what helps teaming is to keep close to the vision and purpose.

People generally buy in to the “why” of the company and the purpose it serves. People who feel close to, and intrinsically motivated by, the purpose and vision tend to be naturally committed to the team.

2. Next live your values. People watch what you do, not just what you say. Model the way you are living your values for your team and then invite them to do the same. Spend time defining what living values means in action. So that people understand the behaviours that are expected.

3. Finally hold people to account and measure performance fairly.

To do all of this requires you to commit to the process and communicate regularly and openly so that. you can help the team stay on target and nip things in the bud when needed.
