Leading With Compassion

I’ve been told a lot as a leader that I’m too soft. I think that’s because of compassion. I will bat for my team and take the fall if it comes to that. However, this doesn’t mean I don’t focus on the work and getting results or expect people to do their jobs. What it means is that on the way to doing that I try to consider my team and making sure they are doing well, that they are being heard and are engaged in the process.

This isn’t always easy of course because sometimes team members just don’t fit or don’t want to engage. Maybe this isn’t the right role or they simply aren’t passionate about the vision and objectives of the company and team.

In these cases it’s best for everyone to help these team members find what works better for them. To me this is the win-win-win (for the person, the team and the company). I believe that everyone of us is passionate about something and that when we are able to harness that through our work, we all can win. Talk about maximizing value right!

As I said this isn’t always easy but as a leader, it’s the compassionate and right thing to do for all involved. And this is by no means soft!

As an employee leading your own life too, you owe it to yourself to look at things objectively and find what works best for you too. However on the way to doing that still be and give of your best!

I think compassion and tolerance comes from a place of fearlessness and immense strength. I’m curious though, what has been your view or experience of or with compassion in leadership?
